Humanoid Robot Ice Hockey Player

The robot featured is Jennifer, one of our DARwIn-OP robots. Video was filmed outdoors at the University of Manitoba quadrangle skating rink during the week of February 6, 2012 and edited together by me.

Music is two versions of the old Hockey Night in Canada theme song (originally aired on CBC television).

This video was created as our proposal for the 2012 DARwIn-OP Humanoid Application Challenge. We won first place at the 2012 ICRA conference, and came in second-place in the online poll portion of the competition.

What does it do in the summer?

We just got back from Bristol for the FIRA World Championships. This robot was playing football ("soccer"), and competed in the sprint, marathon, weight-lifting, and basketball events. We've also got inline skates so it can play roller-hockey when the ice melts.

In the end, doesn't all the effort and technology at work here just come down to a jiggling lever? No offense.

I don't understand how incredible this is? a robot with blades on it's feet and uses the hockey stick to balance itself on....

Oh, I'm well aware of what happened to the dodo. It was the assertion that AI research is going extinct that I was having trouble wrapping my brain around. From my perspective AI research is far from going extinct.

Robotis, the manufacturer of the robot in this video, makes very good hardware, and provides open-source software for doing development on it, making everyone's lives easier. If you haven't seen progress it's because you haven't been looking for it.
