My Samsung American style fridge started to get warm and ice built up in the fridge section, the freezer side was fine. After searching the internet to find costly repair methods, I decided to fix it myself for nothing but 3 hours light work. Fridge model is Samsung RS20 RS21 or similar and this is a common problem with these fridges.

  • Coming up to a year now and fridge still as good as when I posted the video. Thanks for all the comments; just so pleased it's working for everyone.

  • Thanks again to everyone who has posted a comment, great to hear people are having success and saving their fridges.

  • Hi KAHOTEA, yes, mine was making a noise for a while which I assume was the fan grinding against the ice as it built up. As the ice continued to build up the fan stopped turning so the noise stopped after a while - not being very clever I thought the fridge had healed itself at this point but, clearly, it hadn't. Ha. Good luck.

  • Hi zerodeltaapp, I tried Samsung fridge freezer cooling motor which is what I used before but doesn't seem to bring up the motor I ordered. Will try some other combinations and let you know if I'm successful. Cheers

  • I mean I'm so glad not soon glad!!

  • Thanks to everyone for the great comments, soon glad the vid is saving people money. My fridge is still working like new since my 'repair'. Thanks to all.

  • hi Andy , I went thru exactly the same as you, but after alot of searchin on net i have found a long term solution. if you have had your freezer for less than 5yrs ring 0800 988 0123 (uk). tell them you have the common manufacturing fault. they send an engineer to replace it with a modified back panel which stops the fridge icing up again. this is all FREE. seems the original fridges have the defrost sensor in the totally wrong part of panel .

  • Thanks a lot for your vid Andy - helped a lot. Just a quick helping point to anyone else with this problem - If you can arrange to empty your unit (giving stuff to neighbours or family to store for you), You can unplug the unit overnight, leave towels on the floor and inside the unit and all the ice will melt - I put boiling water in two bowls inside the fridge part, twice before going to bed - no hair dryer needed!

  • Thanks Andy, you saved me £££ on repair bill. Good communication too. I left to defrost overnight instead of taking covers off and using heaters. (Samsung technician also called out to come and fix fault long-term)

  • thanks. Worked a treat. you star.

  • great video. I bought a Samsung thinking their brand promised some degree of credibility, but seriously other manufacturers have better troubleshooting guides than Samsung. Plus the repair manuals are freely available. I called up local appliance repairers and they would not want to work with Samsungs. Finally there is only one authorized repairer in my area.

Your video really helped out. Now the bad part - My fridge is still showing repair codes after 20minutes of being fixed for this problem.

  • @AndyCunningham75 Thnx so much Andy, saved me a bundle with a great video that explained everything. Worked exactly as u found, even down to the fan kicking in after 5 minutes!

  • Excellent

  • hey mate thanks for the fix video, our fridge just started making a fan noise and i can see ice in the bottom left hole that has the screw in it,going to fix it tomorrow, but in saying that why should we have to fix a problem like that when its a design fault
