Siddhārtha Gautama (Lumbinī, Nepal, aprile o maggio 565 a.C. Kuśināgara, India, 486 a.C.; sanscrito सिद्धार्थ गौतम; pāli, Siddhattha Gotama) è stato un maestro spirituale in antica India e il fondatore del buddhismo. E' generalmente riconosciuto dai buddisti come il Sommo Budda (Sammāsambuddha). Le date della sua nascita e della sua morte sono incerte: la maggior parte degli storici del 20° secolo collocano la sua vita dal 563 a.C al 483 a.C
Guatama, conosciuto anche come Śākyamuni o Shakyamuni ( "salvia del Shakyas"), è la figura chiave del buddhismo: la sua vita, i suoi discorsi e le sue norme monastiche vengono seguite tutt'oggi dai buddhisti; sono state riassunte dopo la sua morte e memorizzate dai suoi seguaci.

Guatama, also known as Sakyamuni, or Shakyamuni (sage of Shakyas "), is the key figure of Buddhism: his life, his speeches and his monastic rules are followed today by Buddhists, have been summarized after his death and memorized by his followers.
Several collections of the teachings attributed to Guatama have been handed down through oral tradition, while the first written about 400 years later.
