Nice video ! I'm new to Blender so I wonder if the default particle systems are able to handle complex shapes like your spiral. Did you tweak one with a script ? As a developer it's the one thing I really dig in Blender, it supports Python. However I'm still playing with POV-Ray for the moment. I haven't taken the leap yet ;)

Wacky idea of the day : Render an octopus shaped black hole to suck up your entire particle system :D
