Dickens use of the number three strengthens the story. 3 sorrows of Scrooge (father's abandonment, death of his sister, loss of his lover), 3 spirits (past, present, future), 3 acts of atonement (Crachet's turkey, donating money to the poor, reconciliation with his nephew), and 3 wishes/reasons (ask for forgiveness from his nephew, to meet his nephews wife, attend the dinner). It was a beautiful way to structure writing that would not work today. Sadly, it has gone the way of lyrical poetry.
