four or eight beat rhythm refers to the number of beats in the percussion loop. so 4:4 time signature could be used in eithe. case. salsa music, for example, is typically 4:4 with eight beats for each rhythm repeat with 1-2-3-4 percussion being different from 5-6-7-8.
