Thanks for the response about using straws. I had only done this with the plaster bandages. Look forward to trying the alginate.

do you have to put anything on the eyebrows or facial hair so it won't stick?
ninajmisfit13 11 months ago
@ninajmisfit13 Nina, Alginate doesn't "stick" to hair. It will, however, flow down between the hairs so if you want to capture the form and volume of an eyebrow, etc. you'll have to "fill" the area with a water based cream. We use Queen Helene's "Cholesterol" product. That way the alginate stays just on the surface of the eyebrow- still capturing the texture and volume of it on the casting.

Is there a reason you don't use soda or cocktail straws in nostrils to help the model breathe?
Well done instructional video.

@SanDiegoArtNut Hi SD, Sorry about the delay in answering.
We don't use straws because they are uncomfortable, unnecessary and don't work very well.
1. The nostrils face downward so alginate can't flow up them.
2. The alginate doesn't flow uncontrollably so we don't need to spend a lot of time keeping the nostrils clear.
3. We do the nose area last, just before the alginate starts setting.
4. Straws don't stay in place very well and are uncomfortable.

I've never seen alginate like that.
