I remember being really freaked out by this as a kid. It became the subject of many a ghost story in my family when we'd go camping...'The Dead Hand'...ooooooo.

Hand gets darker because it had turned to stone. The radiation from the room rejuvenates the hand and brings it to life. It becomes Eldrad when the missiles shot from fighter planes are absorbed into the creature.
