True, but the fact is that almost all catalan speakers know spanish due to living in spain, so they would understand anyway.
Even not knowing spanish they could understand a little, as the two languages have the same root and have many similarities. But, as you say, hadly understand the total meaning.

aix...sorry, you have your part of reason, but you have to understand me too. Our language,the catalan, has a lot of enemies in our country, who believe that catalan should be forgotten. They even dare to say that it's not a language, that is a dialect or something like that. no catalan is not a mix, its a unique langage such as spanich or french of course it's close to french and spanish(and not portuguese) but if you speak spanish to a catalan speaker, he wouldn't understand what you're saying
