Galindo, 32-years-old, and already a recipient of numerous awards, has provoked controversy since her first performance in 1999 when she projected newspaper stories of violence against women onto her naked body. Her recent work, awarded the 2005 Golden Lion award for best young artist for performances, includes "Who can erase the traces?" a performance where she walks barefoot through the streets of Guatemala City, stopping occasionally to dip her feet in human blood from a white basin she carries in her arms. She developed the piece to protest the ex-dictator Effraín Ríos Montt's 2003 presidential candidacy. The footprints, she says, represented the thousands of civilians murdered by the army during the country's more than 35 years of conflict that ended with the Peace Accords in December 28, 1996. ©1998-2006 Regina Jose Galindo.

Curious to see such a short cut of this. It produces a powerful image but you loose the sense of the journey and the feeling of the where Regina is... But I guess anyone interested can seek out the full length film; and my perception is that most gallery viewers don't watch the whole thing anyway. The comments here indicate some viewers don't understand the blood is human and comes from a hospital, out-of-data donor's blood or so I've been told.... it being human is crucial to the symbolism.
