ANCHOR:
A Pakistani women suspect of high-level links to al Qaeda faced a U.S. Court yesterday. She is charged with attempted murder and assault on U.S. troops in Afghanistan and will reappear in federal court next Monday. Her lawyers say she is innocent.

STORY:
At the New York court hearing, the lawyers said the charges against Pakistani Aafia Siddiqui, 36, were "insufficient".

[Elizabeth Fink, Siddiqui's Lawyer]:
"The allegations as they stated them today without anybody to swear to them, without anybody who was there, based on what the FBI says to be true, right, were to me insufficient to establish proper recourse."

Lawyers also denied that Siddiqui had links to al Qaeda.

In 2004, Siddiqui was identified by the FBI as an "al Qaeda operative and facilitator."
She is married to a nephew of Khalid Sheik Mohammed, who helped plan the Sept. 11 attacks. Her husband was captured in 2003.

Siddiqui was shot and wounded last month while allegedly trying to fire on a group of U.S. troops who had come to question her in Afghanistan.

But Afghan police in Ghazni province tell a different story.

They say Siddiqui was arrested by Afghan police because of reports that she was acting suspiciously. They found maps of the city Ghazni, including one of the governor's house.

According to a senior Ghazni police officer, when U.S. troops requested Saddaqui be handed over to them, the Afghan police refused. U.S. soldiers then allegedly disarmed the Afghan police. The Afghani officer went on to say that the U.S. troops, "thinking that she had explosives and would attack them as a suicide bomber, shot her and took her.?

Siddiqui and her children have been missing from Afghanistan since 2003. Her lawyers claim she has been secretly detained by the US government. But US officials say Siddiqui was in Pakistan until her arrest in Afghanistan.

  • where her children terrorist?

may she be free and reunited with her children. she has suffered so much at the hands of these evil people.

  • So she is married to a nephew of a criminal, how does that make her a criminal? Even if she is guilty of something, it does not justify torture as she appears in the picture.

What about her children, what did they do wrong.

Hope they are fine and re-unite with their mother, soon.
