  • This had to be an extended episode, just to hear all the Johnny's silly remarks! haha

  • @TheLoonwolf yes, you're probably right. even if acceleration down would be useless. i think they thought about the most common place to fire a rocket and this is the ground. so you wouldn't fire it downwards anyway. in that case, sideways is the best. stephen said horizontal, btw ;)

  • If a rocket was able to gain more energy than it's own acceleration + energy from gravity merely by flying sideways then we could extract free energy from it.

  • @beex85 The question was, "In which direction do rockets accelerate best?" The correct answer is "down", because rocket acceleration + gravity acceleration > rocket acceleration - gravity acceleration. If G > 0 then R + G > R. And certainly R + G > R - G ! It could have been fired from any place, for whatever purpose. That isn't specified in the question. Fry's answer was "sideways". If it took off sideways it would just hit the nearest building or hill or whatever.

  • @TheLoonwolf yes, of course. but first you would have to shoot it up in the air. for that, you need to accelerate. you dont accelerate downwards just before it hits the target. firstly, because it would cost more and secondly, that's the job of gravity ;)

  • @beex85 The Earth is usually where a missile's target would be.

  • Johnny Vegas was hilarious in this episode !

  • @TheLoonwolf but I don't think you want to shoot them downwards, really. There is the earth. You don't want the rocket to explode on the spot ;)

  • Nonsense! Rockets accelerate best downwards where they have additional thrust from gravity.
