February 11th 2008: London: The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, addresses the Church of England's ruling body, the General Synod, for the first time since the controversy surrounding his lecture on Law and religion. In this first extract he defends what he actually said and his right to raise the issues; and comments on the extensive range of the reporting of his words.
It is a shame that people just refuse to listen to anything other than a sound bite nowadays! :(

The archbishop's resigning is the only clear way to signal that his statements regarding sharia were unacceptable. His resignation would send an unmistakably clear message that the door is closed on bringing sharia into England, as many in England have made it clear they want it to be. Simply put, someone who'd either out of error or belief, say what he said, is not fit to fill his post. He owes it to the country to go.
