Conservative education secretary Michael Gove is to cancel the building schools for the future programme set up by the previous Labour government. The BSF programme aimed to refurbish or completely rebuild all schools so that they were fit for the 21st century. Many existing buildings have poor facilities or are near to falling down.
Instead, Gove and his Notting Hill pals will spend the money on so called 'free schools'. These are schools set up by groups of parents or teachers with the pupils being housed in existing buildings. These schools lack the facilities of modern schools - such as cooking, chemistry and sports facilities. The offer to create free schools will only be taken up by pushy parents - usually middle class with too much time on their hands. Free schools will also be exempt from local authority control. Headteachers will get to decide on what teachers get paid. So in theory these teachers could siphon off all the money and leave as little as possible to spending on the pupils.
Money diverted into 'free schools is money that could be spent on better things - such as the buildings schools for the future programme or extra teachers.
Typical Tories - a callous disregard for everything and everyone.
