Does it benefit you for the world to get better?

You should pick up a book called "The God Virus" by Dr. Darrel Ray, if you have not done so already. A very interesting perspective the follows the train of thought shown in this video, but from the perspective of a professional psychologist who underwent priesthood training.

@97Wildfire True. Which is why I inserted the word "many" as opposed to "all" or "ultimate". And of that there can be no argument. There are a plethora of natural phenomenon that were at one time "explained" by using superstition that has now been explained properly without it.

@rationalwarrior But we don't know scientifically the ultimate origins of the nature world. Science has yet to give us that answer and quite possibly might never. Commonly atheist like to presuppose that when all the facts are in that origin won't include God, theist presuppose the opposite. Realistically we'll probably be dead before all the facts are in so it comes down to what idea you want to put trust in.

@97Wildfire Once again, tangible, mostly consistent results trumps religious assumptions about how the world works. If religions stayed in the realm of the intangible there probably wouldn't be as many arguments (possibly). It's when it seeks to define the natural world through it's dogma that we get all of the disputes.

@97Wildfire The dichotomy comes to play when "spirituality" (a word that I have never heard a consistent definition of) makes claims on the origin of the natural world, natural phenomenon, etc. For years these things were explained using superstition and the supernatural. And how did we finally learn about the true origins of many things in nature? The Scientific Method. So when spirituality and religion make claims about the natural world and how it works, it can be scrutinized.....

@rationalwarrior I fail to see the dichotomy. Your car may not have come from the belief in God but either did it come from the belief in no God. Atheist commonly want to somehow drive a wedge between spirituality and natural science. They are different pursuits but not mutually exclusive and neither one requires you to leave behind your mind despite the ranting of many anti theist.

@97Wildfire And of course your right. Nothing humans do is infallible. But I see a lot more consistency coming from that camp (evidenced by my car, computer, etc) then from God's "elite" and "favored" here on Earth.

@97Wildfire I think that what separates them is tangible results. For instance, were the Norsemen being guided by Odin when they sailed across the ocean? How can that be proven? If they prayed to Odin and survived the trip, is that proof that Odin exists? These are the kind of things that have me looking at the current crop of religions as bogus because many times they judge the existence of their deity in the same way.
This is the perfect video for Jehovah`s Witnesses to watch! Maybe they will finally understand what`s fucked up about their worldview! I especially appreciate you saying plainly that the world will NEVER be perfect, but giving up and waiting for god to fix it helps no one!

@TimothyStuartRiches It disturbs me that these people are actually looking forward to the "end of days". If they really believe that and the majority of the world buys into this thinking it's no wonder the world is in the shape it's in.
