  • I live in the Catskill Mountains in upstate NY. I have heard this call but instead of the random bursts it's a much longer descending arpeggio, going through modes, like starts on one note does the spiral, then goes down doing the spiral. You can hear it doing the spiral a little bit in recordings across the internet, but I never hear videos of it sining like I have heard it... maybe it's the wrong species or a very imaginative bird?

  • @ThreeLeggedMongoose Try searching on "hermit thrush"--they have an even more beautiful call. It's like a combination of a wood thrush and and a veery--it has the sort of sequence that the wood thrush has, and then the spiraling. Then again, maybe you do just have a very special bird nearby!

  • @inatangle thanks! after more research on the thrushes I found out it's a Swainson's Thrush!

  • @ThreeLeggedMongoose Ooh, I don't know if I've heard that one--I'll have to go listen to a recording.

  • Definitely my favor part of living in New England.. such an enchanting song!

  • (whoop, I mean "spring")

  • i heard about these birds from a test passage.. very interesting. :]

  • @inatangle Hi, I was trying to figure out a bird the other day. You told me it might be hermit thrush, I figured it's swainson's thrush, ends up it's a VEERY!

  • It just wouldn't be a walk in the country without hearing this bird along with the occasional bob white.

  • Their song gives me chills. Reminds me of my childhood at our very heavily wooded campground. I never heard them near my home, only there.

  • This is cool. I also heard them in the woods about two months ago. Followed the song and didn't see anything. Then heard them again when I went to Indiana Dunes, still saw nothing. It is only a few days ago, I heard it again when I went for birding with experts! I was so relieved to know which bird it was, because it is really unsettling to here such a beautiful song and not know who's singing. Very cool video. Thanks :)
