used to use 3 old fashioned irons and a maul we didn`t have bead breakers or j bars or

@rjn1979 we use a similar set up, not quite the same, but works pretty much exactly the same. never had an issue with old rims or tires.

but with ours we tend to need a standard bar to keep the bead rolling off
