This JDI webinar will assist community service providers in responding effectively to sexual assault in prison. Attendees will gain the practical skills needed both to develop services for prisoner rape survivors and to build lasting partnerships between rape crisis organizations and corrections agencies.
The session will offer an overview of best practices for delivering services to incarcerated survivors. Among the issues that will be reviewed are: the need for advocates to be present in prisons; overcoming common challenges to serving incarcerated survivors; and best practices for providing prisoners with rape crisis services, including hospital accompaniment, hotline support, and crisis intervention. To highlight the importance of collaboration, the webinar will feature a conversation between Debora Heaps from the Riverside Area Rape Crisis Center and Dawn Davison, a former warden, about their model program to ensure services for sexual assault survivors at a large California prison. There will be a question-and-answer session at the end of the training.
Who Should Attend:
This webinar is aimed at advocates and service providers -- rape crisis center staff, counselors, and administrators -- though anyone who works in the victim services field is encouraged to attend. Corrections officials, law enforcement, and other professionals in related fields are also invited.
"A New Approach" is the second of a three-part series of webinars on providing services to survivors of sexual abuse in prison. The series is part of JDI's National Sexual Violence in Detention Education and Resource Project, which is supported by the U.S. Department of Justice's Office on Violence Against Women. JDI is an international health and human rights organization that seeks to eliminate sexual violence in all forms of detention.
