President Reagan was more interested in UFOs than AIDs. As Alex Pareene writes, "Reagan talked about this alien threat all the time, to the apparent consternation of his staff." "Spacemen killed, according to my estimates, no Americans, at all, during Reagan's presidency." "Reagan never mentioned AIDS until he was directly questioned about it in his second term, and he never gave a public statement on the epidemic until 1987, when 20,000-30,000 people had already died from it."
Reagan fought against worldwide opposition to South Africa's apartheid regime. It is also true that Republicans who idolize Reagan, seem to ignore, as author Lou Cannon writes, that when he left office, federal spending was 25% higher and that President Reagan went "from excessive tax cuts to corrective tax increases disguised as tax reform" and "submitted eight unbalanced budgets to Congress in succession." A historian, Gil Troy, shows that the US became a debtor-nation, and we "went from owing 16 cents for every dollar in national income in 1981" to three times that after eight years of his presidency. Reagan was not particularly noted for bipartisanship, compromise, or accountability.
@plasticwrapcharlie: So, you prefer to legalize indentured servitude?
Have you ever read the Fable of the ant and the grasshopper? Certainly in times of disaster VOLUNTARY contributions are something of benefit, but in the long term, there must be efforts made by people to become self-reliant or the system will never work at all.

@Soyuz59 legitimized selfishness. I acknowledge your right to hoard. I acknowledge your right to grab and hold as much as you can and make sure no one can take it from you legally. In that case let the government not tax you at all.

I feel for those who are starving, but you have to also ask: When does the obligation of those who labor to make food available to those who have nothing to pruchase it with end? Must they not curb their birth rate (most of the "poor areas" also have high birth rates).
Ort shall we make slaves of those who produce for those who do not forever?
