I was there (as they say). Worked the Flight deck as a NAM1 (Naval Air Mechanic). during 1962 and 63 with 800 squadron (Scimitars). What an adventure. I was in 5K1 and 6K1 messdecks. Returned to Ark Royal in 1970 (after the refit) with 809 (Buccaneers) as an AMN1 (Chief). Don't think we realised at the time how lucky we were to be doing such an enjoyable job. Great stuff thanks for sharing it. My family are absolutely enthralled by it all.

Wonderful. I served in HMS ARK ROYAL for her final deployment 77/78 with 824 Sqn. But more's the point for this clip, I was a 5 yr old in Singapore in the late 50s and that footage brought back much. Thanks, any more. Was actually in KL in the mid 60s with my RAF parents, don't suppose you have any footage of KL, or perhaps Penang (maybe Butterworth) or Pangkor, or the Cameron Highlands?

My late husband was on there at that time, aged 18, an RO, he too would have loved to see this footage, but sadly he died (in Singapore) long before the birth of You Tube. But I'll thank you - on his behalf.

Wonderful footage. A real gem.

My Dad was there before I was conceived or thought of. I was born in 1967. Pity I didn't find these vids before he died 2 weeks ago!!

Yes, it was a nice memory. I remember the FDO flight deck officer told me that each time a Bucanner flied off the deck, it cost 25 pounds, being the cost of the steel cable that pulled the front wheel of the aircraft. Love to fly with 848 Helicoper squadron and not that noisy jets.
It gladdens my heart to receive feedback like yours. Thank you! - Tony, Ottawa

Top quality sound archive. Rare as they come, where / how did you get this?

I took the film with my standard 8 camera, and recorded the sound (or much of it) live on a portable tape recorder. Initially I ran the film and the tape-recorder together, but later striped the film and put the recordings on the sound stripe. In transferring to digital media I kept waht I could of the original sound and rerecorded the music (in stereo) from the records, all of which I stiull own.
