Download and read about this nifty katamari fangame here:

Let's Roll Up! is easily my favorite katamari fangame I've played. I've wanted to record a video of it for a long time, and now that VLC Media Player 1.1 can record videos of the desktop (but maybe not sound), I got my chance :)

The video's music is right out of the game, a nice 8-bit style cover of some music familiar to katamari players.

This is the best I've done, but I know there are better routes possible, because the game's creator's high score is about 7200!

I couldn't decide whether or not to speed this up to double speed. I decided it would probably be too boring for many viewers at normal speed, so I sped it up. And no, if the game actually played this fast I wouldn't do as well :)

Even after I got VLC 1.1, recording and encoding this video was a bit of an adventure for me, only slightly computer literate as I am. The biggest breakthroughs were figuring out that the program records a lot better at half resolution on my computer, and then that the avisynth command "directshowsource" works to display MP4 files in virtualdub. (VLC, avisynth and virtualdub are all awesome free programs ... check out http://www.speeddemosarchive.com/kb to learn more about them.)

The only problem with this game is that you need to know what you're doing pretty well in order to avoid the "Roll Sucked" message :) I guess the game is harder than its creator realized.

  • The best thing about this video is that Katamari Kazoku appears in the related videos :)

  • Please, slowbro, download CamStudio! It's a free program that records your screen much better than VLC.

  • @IramatakKotW Thanks :) I just downloaded CamStudio (which worked great on a different computer I had).

But it looks like the problems are in how much Let's Roll Up taxes the computer, not in what recording software I was using.

    Holy Hornbeam!

But anyway, looks like a lot of fun! I'll download it later today.

  • @CarrotShticks Oh, I got a present :) (well, a few of them)

    I'll add an annotation :D
