Walking Home

This is an experimental piece about women ritually facing street harassment as they walk home. Shot in Brooklyn and Philadelphia, it mixes 16mm film, video, poetry and music in an effort to honor and reclaim our voice, name and humanity in the public sphere. This is for the walkers, talkers and those who say nothing.

@Thespianland, absolutely not. ive found that street harassment cuts across lines of race, ethnicity, class and age, just like all forms of violence. i do feel like the silence around this issue within the blk community needs to be broken. but the issue is bigger than "black boys." i think we all have work to do.

Good work. The other day I saw a poor woman walking down the street and some guy literally ran up to her and stood in her way and while he was puling at his pants said, "Damn sweet baby girl...what yo name is?" I felt pretty bad for the girl

@TheBestMusicChannel8 and I agree with that. How man times I gotta say I DONT agree with how guys act?!! I dunno, maybe I'm in tha ingnorant zone or something. Do what you can to avoid the situation. But when i comes down to it, you can't stop nobody from saying anything. So just do what you can. or you can do the Queen Latifah thing and "punch 'em dead in his eye..." U.N.I.T.Y. But what's that gonna solve? SO, you have sons, you have nephews and male cousins, teach 'em right. and calm down.

@causticstorm I don't know about burkas. But definitley in all the other types of clothes you've listed. I used to try that. Just dressing in wind breakers, hoodies and sweat pants and sacrificed my love for fashion because of these types of idiots. You defintley don't have to dress anything close to resembling hoorish to get this treatment. Luckily for the past several years I've been living in a place where men don't do this to me at least. And I avoid places that I know it's likely to happen.

@blueneon So we have to wear burkas to not get harassed? While you fools walk around without shirts in the summer whether? Of course. Many of us don't have our asses all hangin out. Many of us that get harassed can put on a pretty summer dress, or jeans and still get harrassed. Maybe you should just tell your friends to learn how to have more respect for themselves and stop acting like a bunch of wild animals in a god damned zoo.
