Horde
An audio visual installation by David Bickley with music and atmospheres by David Bickley & Tom Green

Background
As humans we tend to think of ourselves as single entities, unaware in the main of the numerous organisms that live in symbiosis with us. This piece is designed to portray the human body as an ancient landscape populated by indigenous beings and constantly under threat from frightful alien hordes.
Introduction
This is an audiovisual installation where the workings of the immune system in the gut are portrayed in the style of an epic Irish myth. The Idea is to explore the complexity of the biology involved and make it understandable and engaging to a wide audience. We do this by switching context and drawing parallels between an infection and a large-scale ancient battle.
We wish to explore the roles of the policing mechanisms in the body and paint a complex world that will encourage the viewer and in particular young people, to take a broader and more educated day-to-day view of their own inner worlds.
The nature of this collaboration between my self, an experienced video/sound artist and the APC is almost as symbiotic as our own benign bacteria. We have created a synopsis that brings the story of an invading horde of salmonella into a very real and dramatic setting, using digitally manipulated still and motion imagery captured by scientists at APC we create tangible scenarios that transport the viewer directly into our mythic world.
The true test of this partnership is in forging narrative elements that sit comfortably in both settings, in the biology of the human body, and in the ancient feuding tribes of Ireland.
The Piece
Our story can be conveniently broken down into 7 acts:
◆Introduction to the society prior to invasion
◆Invasion / infection by the salmonella horde
◆Journey of the horde through the labyrinths/Oesophagus
◆Annihilation of most of the horde in the poisoned lake/Stomach
◆The hardened elite corps entering the rich fields of the villi/intestine and the perilous mission through the various defences
◆The battle of peyers patch. The infiltration of the main fort and the mingling of the horde with the indigenous dendritic cells using fake ID. The usurping of the called in reinforcements and the subduing of the immune system.
◆Large scale mass pillaging, Suicide T cells, all hands to the pump...butdeath!
