If's official, after speculations on whether Nvidia were actually still alive or whether they just employed someone to spout rumours all over the interweb. They have given us what they like to call a fun fact of the week.
This week's fun fact is that the names of the first two graphics cards based on the new GF100 GPU will be called the GeForce GTX 480 and GeForce GTX 470.
What happened to the model numbers after GTX 295? It seems that Nvidia could be giving early indications on how fast this GPU really is, and hence why have skipped a few model numbers to give ATI's Radeon 5000-series card a wide berth whilst they get ready to take the market by storm.
This was announced on the Nvidia Facebook page, but typically being Nvidia, no specifications, power consumption figures or release dates were announced, but we didn't expect them to announce that anyway, did we?
Luckily, there is footage available displaying the new Fermi based GF100 at CES which shows you the size of the card, the supposed fact that it has three billion transistors and that the card can draw up to 300watts using its 6 pin and 8-pin power connectors.
Facebook, being the new outlet for Nvidia, they previously announced the new Anti-Aliasing mode, but it's unclear on exactly what the sample rate will be, and how it will be achieved.
One thing I'm interested in, and this will serve purpose if the model numbers mean something, but should we be expecting double the performance compared to the 200-series cards? Let's just hope that it's not double the price too.
yo people out there stop talking about wattages.. you got no money thats your problem! stupid newbs go buy voodoo 1 than
GTX 480 is the fastest single card.. i got 1000 w so what the fuck to worry about? the only thing about to worry about is 6970.. because than its time to sell the gtx 480 :)
seriously compaining about watts ... just go get a life or complain about gas

@Wewk1337 A GTX 470 consumes around 225w or so at load and a 480 is a but higher.
You can run an i7 system with 2X GTX 470's on a 600w PSU if you wanted to.

thank you. I think i ll stick to my gts 250 sli since i will not play any games during school time.

@the5creename I'm not sure. I think a 250's watt consumption at max load is around 300w. So two would be around 600w. A 470 consumes around 450w at max load. This is based on the benchmarks I've seen. I could be wrong.

@TheSoukz First it beats the 5870 in direct x 11 and tesselation by far. Second It dosen't get hot at all.... Mines 43 celsus at idle an from 60-85 celsus on full load. Third the 5970 is better but cost another 200-300 bucks more so of course it would be better.

@S1lverspike You don't know anything about liquid cooling, that much is apparent. Liquid cooling does not require much maintenance except once every few years. As for PhyX, its quite beneficial when used in certain applications and games. It largely offsets the tasks and resources that would otherwise be keeping the CPU busy thus giving the CPU more opportunity to handle other tasks with its freed up resources.

the gtx 470 is known to consume alot of power, but how much would my bill increase in a year (average/estimation)?
I have a gts 250 sli right now.

@TheSoukz get a 5970 they are the shit.

@mikey9890
True power? Also it shows a lot of watt usage, 95C degrees in full load which is...... and all this for what price??? the GTX 470 is a joke at that price, it's even worse than a HD 5850 in a benchmarking.
