Source and Translation:
Kartli-kakheti region, Eastern Georgia, traditional, from the repertoire of the Rustavi Choir
Georgia adopted Christianity in the 4th century. Georgian church music, while influenced by monotone Byzantine chant, blossomed into three-part harmony long before polyphony was accepted elsewhere as a part of Christian sacred music practice. This song, dating from the 12th century, is a centerpiece of the Georgian orthodox liturgy. Holy God, Holy Immortal, Holy Almighty, have mercy on us.

  • Excellent, dearest ladies! My heartfelt congratulations!

  • I can't begin to describe the effect this music has upon me...other than to say it almost makes me wish I had been born a female so that I might be able to sing in a group like this.....

  • Great. Thank you for the beautiful music

  • Very clear voices, I've heard you when you were singing "Shen har venahi". I'd like to know, have you sung another Gmerto - as grace before dinner-party? Or do you have video or music with some choir singing it?

  • This is cute.

But when Rustavi Choir sings it, well, I feel like my chest is under an overwhelming passional tempest.
