  • Thank you for posting. My sincere prayer is that all Christians: East and West be renewed by the life-giving patristic understandings of ransom and set aside the poison of penal substitution atonement theory. I also pray that there may be goodwill between all Christians as opposed to playing the distracting blame game that "the west" made us do it, the west is to blame for all our heresy. History shows that there's enough blame to go around. Let's help eachother rediscover truth.

  • The crossing from right to left or "push" was a custom begun by the Byzantine Imperial Church at Constantinople, hence the "Eastern Orthodox" churches who worship using the Byzantine liturgies of Sts. John Chrysostom or Basil have inherited the custom of the push. The Oriental Orthodox (i.e.Armenians, Copts, Ethiopians), typically use the pull - as has been a custom prior to Imperial influence.

  • So the union with God is not an assimilation thru Christ but a return to the natural state of our nous that we lost because of the Fall. But, this can only be acheived after our nous has been purified, illumined and deified. Then the eye (nous) of our souls will see the Uncreated Light and be united with It. That is what all the saints have lived. To believe that Christ needs to assimilate us to Him, is like saying that we never were created in God's image. That is Western rationalization.

  • The eye(nous) of our soul needs to be purified in order to unite with Christ. St. Gregory Palamas spoke much about the state of the nous. It is also referred to as the heart. There's a part in Liturgy that says: Let us lift up our hearts. That refers to the nous which is the energy of our souls. God is asking us to raise the focus of our nous to Him. Whatever we absorb through our intellect is transferred to our hearts (nous). I recommend reading Orthodox Psychotherapy by Met Vlahos.

  • Christ is Risen!

I have to agree with sprtslvr1973 that he did cross himself incorrectly. Nobody who considers himself Orthodox would ever cross themselves in the Western style. It is, in itself, a wrong action of the faith. Also, his explanation of Christ uniting our human nature to His through His descent is a Western view of some kind of assimilation with Him which is wrong. We have the potential of deification because it is in us, but our nous has become darkened.

  • Very good & interesting teaching. I would like to know if Orthodoxy is active in Lebanon, & if you would recommend an American Orthodox convert to go to Lebanon to learn Orthodoxy at a seminary or with other Arab Christians?

  • Thank you for this magnificent presentation! Insightful and qualitatively done.

    Greetings from an Orthodox brother

    Бог да ви благослови!
