Do you find Hooke's Law difficult to understand? This video will help you understand 'Hooke's Law' from a simple experiment. A metal wire is stretched at the ends so that its length increases from its natural value. The corresponding stress-strain curve is shown in the graph. When the strain is small, the stress is proportional to the strain. This is the region where Hooke's law is valid. If the strain is increased a little, the stress is not proportional to the strain but the wire is still elastic. The elastic behavior is shown upto a point in the curve called the elastic limit or the yield point. Beyond the elastic limit the behavior of the wire is plastic. If the deformation is increased further, the wire breaks at a certain point known as the fracture point.
