i don't see much chinese swordsmanship and some are useing obvious fencing techs.
still i like the idea of a jianshu art/sport, a long the lines of kendo. but this seems to still need a lot more work.

it would be good if you could tell who has been hit that way spectators will be able to see who has been hit by who and not just the referee.

@Baihu108 might want to correct your last sentence. the jians weigh...700grams..the sabers weigh..100-500grams. So a saber fencer's cut can be 2x faster than those solid piece of wood thingy. As a saber fencer..i have to react to a hellishly light steel blade. Parrying..and evading(mostly) that flimsy blade. So..you're telling me that my eyes can't track a solid piece of wood coming at me?
test my fencing against them? it won't happen. i dont need to prove anything to............that.( ゚∀゚)lol

@ShuyuKoukin Seems we r thinking along similar lines, bt to my mind, the use of these flexible, unrealistic plastic swords changeds things from being a martial art to a martial sport. It is a question of what you're after? Nothing wrong with sport, but it is quite different. If I my make a friendly suggestion, if you are interested in testing your swordplay skills try a TCSL Tournament. The play is quite different when your opposite is swinging a solid piece of wood that could put you down.

@Baihu108 I agree except for one thing. It's possible to use Authentic Jianshu in a bout with heavier swords. They need to work on their arm/wrist strength. All I can say is they don't condition themselves. Martial Art is about fitness..they shouldn't use the weight excuse. Just like boxing they train you for the sport.
Heavy weapon or not..I get bruised anyways because some people just cant fence!

@lohanshinobu No offense intended. I've handled these plastic jian, as well as 100s of antique QIng jian in both Museum & Private collections. Honestly the plastic swords do not at all compare well with real historical jian. Their flexibility is a real issue. I understand that you are trying to make weapons that are safe, but just as modern sport fencing weapons do not move like real swords, these plastic weapons do not handle or play like real jian. Give solid wood a try. Best of Luck.

@Baihu108 FYI do your research, these COMBAT JIANS weigh 700grams/1.5lb. Their solid and not as light as you think they would be from your poor observation.

@ShuyuKoukin I agree, this has much more in common w/ poor epee fencing than Chinese historical swordsmanship, but what more can you expect from using light, plastic "swords" instead of real weight, solid weapon. You might have a look: TCSL Inaugural Full Contact Tournament @ Google video, the TCSL minimum weight requirement for the swords is 700 grams. Injuries are not uncommon at TCSL full contact tournaments. Unfortunately, most Martial Artists today don't want to risk even getting a bruise.
This is fencing.
