Here is a 3 speed Teletype Model 28 KSR copying from 3 different test sentence generators otherwise known as 'the fox'. Here you can see the noticeable difference in sound and cadence of a Teletype in action. Speed is changed with a gear shift mechanism while advancing the type manually by rotating the fly wheel on the motor.

  • I used to type on one of these. I loved the sound those "telexes" made. My savings/loan had one in their lobby and you could stand and watch the different stories coming in - circa 1962.

If it was a bulletin, the typing would be started with a bell-like "ding, ding, ding" indicating that it was something real important from AP or UPI like JFK assassination or a plane crash.

  • That is the origin of the "News Flash" - 5 successive signal bells and then tag line. Did you see the news of the JFK assassination come across the wire?

  • music to my ears !!

  • I still have my 28. I am getting it back on the air. Hope to have it by end of summer.

  • This was like the ancient fax machine, right.

  • @dbentley18 - Naw, I detect a few Model 15's among those used on the 1010 WINS SFX.

  • It sounds like what they play on 1010 WINS here in New York City

  • These machines use a much different mechanism from the 14 or the 15.

  • This "clean" sound of the Model 28 in "60" mode (I measured it as 368 OPM) sounds not too dissimilar to the custom-made teletype sound heard for years on WCBS Newsradio 88 in New York. It does seem there's a difference in sound quality among the 14, 15 and 28 models. Most teletype SFX I've heard were recorded from a 15.
