Dr. Yaron Brook and Dr. Onkar Ghate of the Ayn Rand Institute discuss the roles of reason and faith in Western civilization.

The question: Is there anything wrong with Western civilization?

Dr. Onkar Ghate answers that one needs to define what the West means. He notes that the West has philosophical influences by Plato and Aristotle, and that prosperity was brought by Aristotle's influence. Every culture has mystical elements, but what is distinctive about the West is that it has this rational, Aristotelian element, and this is what makes it good. The Christian, Platonic, anti-reason element brings evil into Western civilization.

This is a Q-&-A excerpt from "Why Do They Hate Us?" delivered March 26, 2003 in Irvine, California.

  • @JaredR3535 If you've ever given a long speech or talk the you would know that a caugh drop won't help.

  • I like how that guy is initially nodding his head like he knows what the fuck he just said

  • I love Ayn Rand and her philosophy! This guy has got to stop coughing/clearing his throat between every sentence. Bad habit and sounds less creditable! Get a cough drop dude!

  • @bma051000 Because no one understands these things - not even most of those who call themselves Objectivists. I wouldn't even recommend "epistemology" but "philosophy, who needs it" and other essays. Because it's far easier to understand her dissection of actual philosphical history and to what disasters it led than to see the importance of concept formation. And even my recommendation would be much more low-level than the altruist-egoist shallowness that dominates the debate.

  • these guys look like jehovas testomoners.

  • @bma051000 - I read her 'Epistemology' long ago, cannot recall all the specifics of it, but do recall her denial of divine revelation with ''reason'' being the exclusive source of knowledge for her. As I mentioned above, had she been a liberal, right wingers would call her 'antichrist' for this. But because of her overall political outlook, conservatives went easy on her.
