Young environmental champions take green battle to the web

Blue Earth Greening 2007, a website competition with a green twist, promotes awareness of climate change to youths through the innovative use of IT.

Climate change. Global warming.

These are the buzzwords on everyone's lips these days.

But saving the environment is not something to be left up to eco-activists, everybody can play a part too, as these secondary school students found out.

Over 60 students from six secondary schools participated in Blue Earth Greening 2007, a website competition jointly organised by School of Business and School of Media and Info-Communications Technology that aims to promote awareness of climate change and its impact on our environment to students through the innovative use of IT.

After attending a jumpstart programme to learn the fundamentals in web development, e-commerce and project management, these youths - some as young as 13 - embarked to create websites with an eco-message to spread the 'Go Green' theme.

The "Green Protagonists" from Dunman Secondary School was crowned the champions of the competition during the finals of the event held on 24th October at Singapore Polytechnic.
Their impressive website provides current information on environmental issues like climate change, useful tips on what we can do to help save the environment and an interactive platform for teens to share their ideas on how we can make our earth green again.

The teams were assessed based on votes that they received through the Blue Earth Greening website and judges' evaluation.

During the finals, guest speaker Mr Suresh from National Environmental Agency shared tips on what we can do to reduce our carbon footprint while Mr Derrick Callow from Google spoke of how students could make use of Internet tools to spread the green message beyond the local community and take it globally.
