The really terrible thing about him asking if your Pokémon is/are dead, and why he's standing in front of a grave, is that his Raticate is missing as of that battle. This could be explained by him having more than six Pokémon, and wanting something other than Raticate, except he only has five in this battle, which means there's no strategy-based reason for it to be gone.
