I coughed.
How could I be sick? I asked myself. Not today. Not the day before Frankie's birthday.
I tried to get out of bed again but found I was too weak.
Well, maybe it was for the best, after what happened on Nick's birthday
::FLASHBACK::
"Kevy," Arianna said in that awful voice of hers "Get me something to drink, will you?"
Kevin looked at me, back at her and said "Of course. I'll be right back"
He left and I was instantly nervous.
What would she say? Would she beat me up?
I shifted nervously in my chair.
Her soft words startled me "Oh, Stella" she clucked her tongue "Poor, naïve Stella." She shook her head "Face it honey, he doesn't love you any more."
I turned away from her so that she wouldn't see the tear roll down my cheek.
She grabbed my face and pulled it back harshly, so that I was inches from her face. She had a crazed, almost determined look in her eyes.
"So back away," she said through clenched teeth, "Before you get hurt."
I pulled away and stood up. I didn't even spare a glance at her or Kevin, I just said goodbye to Joe and Nick and left.
::END FLASHBACK::
So I've been scared to death of her ever since.
I was so entrapped in my thoughts that I was startled when I heard something tapping on my window.
I reached over and opened it to see Joe sitting on his windowsill, smirking. Like I had said before, Kevin's bedroom was directly across from mine and him and Joe shared the room.
I managed a weak hey for him before erupting into a violent fit of coughing.
He smirked. "I was gonna ask how you were but after that, it'd be a stupid question."
I coughed again. "Thanks for checking up on me Joe," another cough "but I don't think Ill be able to make it to Frankie's birthday party."
He sighed and looked down.
"Okay," he said, looking back at me. "I hope you feel better, though"
"Tell Frankie happy birthday for me"
"I will"
He opened his mouth to say something I coughed, covering his words.
"What was that? I didn't hear you." I asked.
He looked down again, apparently embarrassed.

What did Joe say???
