Beyond Theology Mysticism and the Perennial Philosophy hoasted by Charles Atkins, Jr
According to Huxley, the perennial philosophy is:

the metaphysic that recognizes a divine Reality substantial to the world of things and lives and minds; the psychology that finds in the soul something similar to, or even identical with, divine Reality; the ethic that places man's final end in the knowledge of the immanent and transcendent Ground of all being; the thing is immemorial and universal. Rudiments of the perennial philosophy may be found among the traditional lore of primitive peoples in every region of the world, and in its fully developed forms it has a place in every one of the higher religions
(The Perennial Philosophy, p. vii).

  • Um, shouldn't this be about Aldous Huxley since he is the originator of Perennial Philosophy? This makes it seem like Atkins is the originator and not giving credit where its due.

  • @isellsoap1 Description has been updated Thank you.

  • I just recently learned about Houston and his life's works, but the man is a genius. I too have been on a spiritual quest of unity, because let's face it, all of the major religions still practised today are everso connected, they must need each other, in the same way that we, as humans, need each other. May God continue to bless and guide us all for the path of truth and righteousness

  • Well Most religons make exclusive and contradictory claims as to the nature of god

Also atleast some may only be as true as Alchemy's grasp of nuclear transmutation was true. Alchemist did happen to be right that one element could become another, Yet they all failed horribly to even explain or produce what their claims entailed.

  • Why is this associated with Watts? He's never mentioned? It should have had Huston Smith's name instead of Watts.

  • I cant recall Why I Did that,

Or I should have put Charles Atkins, Jr name as host .

(possibly they previewed the next epsode which discusses Watts))

  • @isellsoap1 NOT ORIGINATOR OF PHILOSOPHY! ORIGINATOR OF THE MODERN TERM!

  • @isellsoap1 Actually Huxley did not. Nor did he even come up with the term. It originates earlier. Plus, the Sufis and others take their spiritual practice as being the heart of all religions. The idea of the universal center of all religions has been around for a very long time. It was said in Ancient Greece "all roads lead to God."

  • @isellsoap1 The opening sentence of Huxley's THE PERENNIAL PHILOSOPHY reads, "Philosophia Perennis--the phrase was coined by Leibniz ; but the thing...is immemorial and universal. Rudiments of the Perennial Philosophy may be found among the traditionary lore of primitive peoples in every region of the world, and in its fully developed forms it has a place in every one of the higher religions."

  • I have recently learned of Smith's works and had once thought that my divine quest was alone in the way I thought about religion, but I am wrong. This man is a genius and is definately on the right track for unity and discovering the true world view that we all seek. may God forever bless us becuse of the light that has been shed
