Adding a ground strap from the alternator case, to the block, or better yet the negative battery post will stop this problem. There is a bushing that holds the alt to its bracket.. sometimes current doesn't flow properly.

Your Jetta does not start much differently than my 1984 Scirocco with 1.8 Litre gas engine. The only exception is the cylinder noise. How is your Jetta running? I have a 1997 VW Jetta TDI, which replaced the Scirocco which I donated in January 2000.
