    Adding a ground strap from the alternator case, to the block, or better yet the negative battery post will stop this problem. There is a bushing that holds the alt to its bracket.. sometimes current doesn't flow properly.

  • Your Jetta does not start much differently than my 1984 Scirocco with 1.8 Litre gas engine. The only exception is the cylinder noise. How is your Jetta running? I have a 1997 VW Jetta TDI, which replaced the Scirocco which I donated in January 2000.

  • But you did that in warm engine, do it when it's cold.
