Fossil is a vary large solar powered mechanical dragon fly.
In sunshine the wings will periodically flutter and the mouth section twitches.

Length: 28cm. Wing Span: 33cm.

Fossil is so named because as I constructed it I was thinking of Meganeura,
a huge 320 million years old dragonfly-like insect belonging to the Protodonata group,
which had a wing span of around 70cm.

  • The only reason why marblemad thinks it's justified to call his sculpture kinetic, is because he thinks it sounds cool.

  • that... or it's because it's a kinetic sculpture.

  • You know - it never ceases to amaze me how many stupid inconsiderate non-creative (considering they can't think of any better discriptive words to use than profanity) ignorant people just feel free to post "ugly" comments about others unique work. Their mama's didn't raise 'em right! Anyway - this piece is wonderful and thanks for posting it so that some (!) of us can appreciate it!

  • Very cool.

  • @Prankster10001 You're assuming that you're trying to look at the energy of the the lump of coal as it interacts with other objects on a macro level. However this premise was never established. I simply said that there is kinetic energy within the object. I wiki'd it just to be sure "Microscopically, the thermal energy is the kinetic energy of a system's constituent particles, which may be atoms, molecules, electrons, or particles in plasmas." And your last point: Xeno's Paradox.

  • @slacker7667 small. Further more are you retarded? Or just 12 thinking you know everything about chemistry/physics ?

  • @slacker7667 There is so much wrong with your comment I don't even know where to begin but here it goes. First of all I do discount the molecular motion because "molecular motion" does not have anything to due with Kinetic Energy in a solid object. "Molecular motion", or the atoms in the compound are shaking back and forth but this "energy" is thermal energy. Second the mass of an atom is not infinitesimally small because by definition that would also make the lump of coal's mass infinitesimally

  • @Prankster10001 Only if you discount the molecular motion of the constituent atoms. I know their mass is infinitesimal, but there are billions of them in a lump of coal, and they deserve a voice. That motion (which is represented by the velocity of a mass) is what leads to heat and temperature and whatnot.

  • @slacker7667 A lump of coal only has kinetic energy if its moving, K=1/2 m v^2

  • @MarbleMad even a lump of coal technically has kinetic energy. It's a cool sculpture, but when you say kinetic sculpture, I think people are expecting a little more movement than tiny vibrations. That said, I do like the metalworking very much and the segmentation on the dragonfly is well done, I just feel like it's lacking something in the kinesis department

  • you know, I watched all the way till the end of this video thinking if it's going to fly..... I felt exactly the same way when I broke into the Airport in GTA III. Got on a plane all excited that I was going to fly that damn plane. .... don't konw how many times I tried to lift that thing..... but anyway, this Fossil looks fantastic! love the coloring and mechanics. I would deffinately put it my desk! nice vid!

  • This is a great machine. Of course, people who criticize have better ones, right? I wish mine would work like that. They´re static but are this kind of mechanical insects too. Love it.

  • i was waiting for the thing to fly off!!!!!
