I definitely should have cut this away a lot higher, but I'm okay, so whatever. I was at like 400ft when my reserve opened all the way.
I opened my main at about 3500 and it looked like I just had some line twists. I wasn't too worried because it looked like it would be fine as soon as the line twists came out. The line twists finally all came out around 2000 and I saw that my slider was stuck and it was causing me to spin, which is why the line twists took so long to come out. I messed with it for a minute trying to get the slider to come down, but it wouldn't move. I made the decision to cut away around 1500ft, which was risky, but it worked out. I got up and walked away without any more drama.
Seeing something like that is a good lesson to learn. When i did my AFF stage 7 i watched as a student i was learning with, had a cyprus fire at the same time he pulled his chute. (750ft) landed in a creek under one and a half canopies. Last time he ever jumped.

I was talking to one of my SD instructors once and he told me this story. He had just landed and he was rolling up his "chute. As he was standing there he heard a loud pop behind him. He turned around and this guys feet were just off the ground when his reserve opened !

duh...just read your entire post. Wow! That is low. My hard deck is 2500 ft but have not had to cut away yet.
