I would probably never have encountered this piece but for a YouTube viewer kindly sending it to me. Eduardo Medina Ribas (1822-83) was a member of a musical dynasty from Porto in Portugal. He actually made his name as an operatic baritone, and was active in Portugal, Spain and Brazil, where he eventually settled and died. I believe that there are only four surviving compositions by him, of which this piece -published in Rio de Janeiro around 1871 - is the most well-known. For whatever reason, Ribas moves from Ab major to E major and C major for the trio - extremely remote keys! In preparing this performance, I had to make an executive decision on how much of the polka to recapitulate between the trio and the coda, as the score is not clear on that point.

I find this piece typical of the sort of music my teacher would give me years ago.

@thrippleton Thank you. Alas none of my teachers gave me this type of music - I had to find it for myself in dusty second-hand book stores!
