Garnet Rogers talking about and performing one heck of a great song. Doug Long backs him up on fiddle. Please excuse the occasional hiccups, but it's encoded from a video tape

  • This song is about doing the right thing. Ban horse slaughter in the US and ban the exporting of horses for meat.

  • @Moondance727 Why? In a LOT of countries horse is just as legitimate a source of meat as cow, pig or chicken... Sure, if you have the money to 'rescue' and nurse an old race horse, go for it... but not everyone does, can or even should...

  • @ClintonHammond do you eat cats and dogs? Horses are companion animals, have you seen what happens at slaughter? Horses are extremely intelligent and sensitive, there is no humane slaughter, the captive bolt does not work well with horses, and in Mexico they stab the horses several times trying to sever the spinal cord. Horses smell the blood as they approach the holding pen and the flight instinct takes over, they fight to flee, the capitve bolt was designed for cattle.

  • @Moondance727 Do -I- eat cat or dog? I haven't... yet... but lots of people around the world do, and I will not stoop to criticizing them because it might offend my sensibilities. I know people who keep rabbits as pets, but that doesn't stop me from BBQing a few every year, especially at Easter.

Let's agree that it's a helluva good song... Let's not clutter up this comment section with soap-boxing ok...

  • I'm not going to comment on eating companion animals - each country is different. I will say only two things... 1. There are far more humane ways to kill an animal than that of the slaughterhouse - there they panic, feel fear, and hear/watch other animals die. Even the long sleep with a vet isn't very fast. I'm not going into what methods are best - just know that they're out there - if we feel tht humans have the right to life or a quick death then why not the beings we're to care for?

  • I do love this song though - the Roger's were blessed because of what they did... if I'm correct, that colt born from that mare ended up being the cornerstone of their entire racing/breeding program.

  • OMG... all this bitching and whining about drugs how shameful, companion animals...

Horses in the majority are companion animals and deserve the dignity of a kind end even if it is only the vet and the long sleep.

Step up to the plate and DO SOMETHING other than complain.

I own two rescues, they are my joy the first has had a profound impact on my life, not the other way around. Adopt one or toss $10.00 at your local rescue.

  • @Moondance727 this song is about a horse? i thought it was about the islanders - oilers final in '83......whadaya know!

  • oops sorry, i didn't think it posted....to cont

the chemicals fed to horses to keep them healthy are carcinogenci to humans. The EU requires that the horses be chemical free for at least 180 days, the horses run through slaughter in Canada and Mexico are not.

  • @ClintonHammond iit starts with responsible breeding, did you know the federal gov gives subsidies to the racehorse industry to breed? What happens to those extra horses that don't make it, they are sent to slaughter, perfectly good horses, just not winners on the track. There is no humane slaughter and do you eat cat or dog? Horses are companion animals just as cats and dogs. In addition, the meat is not fit for human consumption, american horses are fed a carcinogenic cocktail to keep them
