Lyrics & Information

This was taken from the compilation album 'Whiskey In The Jar'. It was written about Phil Lynott's Grandma Sarah (whom he also named his daughter after and wrote another song called 'Sarah'). In my opinion this is one of the most tender and heartfelt songs you will ever hear from the rockers Thin Lizzy, it is not on youtube and is one of my personal all time favourites. Enjoy!

Lyrics :-

Captain's hair,
shone softly in the sun.
Rode on his best mare,
to Sarah.

Schoolboy eyes,
would stare in innocent fun.
Never told no lies,
he loved Sarah.

{Chorus}
Whispered by a bramble,
carried by a brook
to every fishers hook,
"Sarah".

Fragrant fields,
Playing croquet in the sun.
Nothing appeals
like Sarah.

{repeat chorus}

  • Is this song only available on the compilation album?

  • The original version of this song was released on their second album 'Shades of a Blue Orphanage'. This version with the extra guitar on it I think is only available on this compilation album.

  • thanks for putting this up aint heard it on utube yet brilliant song do u also have the song dublin from lizzy s early days?

  • Hi Jason. I do have that track yes. Check my channel and type it into the search bar on my videos. I have around 3 versions including the official release. Enjoy & thanks!

  • This is not "Version 2" but "Version 1" This song was written about Lynott's grandmother and first appeared on 1972's Shades of a Blue Orphanage. The other "Sarah" included on Black Rose wasn't written until his daughter was born several years later.

  • Hi bud. To clear things up, listen to Version 1, it is the stripped down original version on Shades of a Blue Orphanage. This song was an updated version so it is called Version 2 because it has an overlayed extra guitar track and was done at a later time. I have Version 1 in my channel check it out. Thanks for the comment!

  • I couldnt agree more...any FAN is the greatest fan..And i allways think what??when people talk about how underrated Thin Lizzy was,they obviously didnt grow up in my neighbourhood.I am 40,and have been listening to Lizzy,since i was 14,and i have had alot of their vinyls,sadly allso alot of girlfriends;),where i left them behind,i even HAD:( pirattapes and what not,some pretty good stuff,made by the soundcrews.And i still discover songs i havent heard before,and do i feel blessed.Great post.THX

  • Classic. Thanks for posting. A lot of people are not too familiar with the Eric Bell era, which I think is a pity. There is a lot of great poetry in Phil's lyrics from that time.

  • @BaptizedinFire

    Cheers for that, you oobviously know your Lizzy :) Ilove this track

  • @uncleambient I actually think Gary Moore did the lead guitar on this one. It says so in the new expanded edition of "Shades", where some remixes were included, among them this song. Those were all made in 1977, by Phil, Gary, and Midge Ure.

  • Amazing... my dad used to sing the other version to me when i was a baby :) <3
