First saw this in the early 1980's when I moved from South Florida to the Panhandle. I saw signs that said 'No Fish Bateing' along some roads in the Forest and wondered what the hell that meant! Shortly there after I learned about worm gruntering ..... :)
I live about 65 miles north of the Appalachicola River and the Appalachicola National Forest. When I go down to Blountstown or Bristol Florida to fish....these earthworms are always with me, along with live crickets.
Serious question: Given the scientific basic of the practise, is it reasonable to conclude that in a land where moles or similar predatory creatures don't exist, one couldn't expect the same escape response? They can not have gained an evolutionary wariness.
well where i come from 12 worms is about 2.16 or maybe even 3 dollars by now. So lets say these guys make 80-1.00 per dozen? so 3000 divided by 12 is 250. These guys make 250 dollars for every 3 hours. 250 times 7 is 750 dollars. Which is good money for 21 hours a week, but split between 3-4 people is sort of iffy.
Interesting, and as I was saying, I wonder if these people make as much as those people in Maine who gather the bloodworms who were on Mike Rowe's Dirty Jobs show.
Saw this family on Dirty Jobs. They must be famous!
Worm grunting looks so fun :D
