THE CRAMPS - GREEN DOOR (Album: Psychedelic Jungle, 1981)

Cover of the 1950s Bob Davie / Marvin Moore classic

Lyrics:

Midnight, one more night without sleeping
Watching, 'til the morning comes creeping
Green door, what's that secret you're keeping

There's an old piano and they play it hot
Behind the green door
Don't know what they're doing but they laugh alot
Behind the green door
I wish they'd let me in so I could find out what's
Behind the green door

Knocked once, tried to tell them i'd been there
Door slam, hospitality's thin there
Wonder, just what's going on in there

I saw an eye ball peeping through a smoky cloud
Behind the green door
Well I said Joe sent me someone laughed out loud
Behind the green door
All I wanna do is join the happy crowd
Behind the green door

Midnight, one more night without sleeping
Watching, 'til the morning comes creeping
Green door, what's that secret you're keeping
Green door, what's that secret you're keeping
Green Door.

  • One of my favorite Cramps song, also a very underrated song sadly.Anyways RIP Lux Interior you were certainly an influence in my life.

  • Green Door was a pre rock funky song writen and performed by a guy named Bob Davie. Lux got hold of this song and made it totally CRAMPS! Nobody sings like Lux!!! This is a similar cover that Mic and the Stones made with "Just My Imagination" on Some Girls. Some Bands just take ordinary songs and make them amazing. That's what Lux did here... and, it's my favorite song they ever sang. Long live LUX INTERIOR to all that were touched by this unique and very cool individual!!!!

  • Le pire, c'est qu'on n'a jamais su, officiellement, de source sûre, ce qu'il y avait derrière cette fichue porte verte.

  • Like this Crammps cover ..... talk about sadddd ..... original hit artist Jim Lowe ..... as a country radio jock ..... Jim wanted to "break" into rock and be another "Dick Clark" the rock stations did not want him .... he sounded too country and ..... yes ..... the country program dire3ctors said he sounded too "up town" he cuts his version of Green Door just to try and raise some rent money .... the press "dubbed" him the singing disc jockey...... the stars just did not line up for Jim ...

  • great version. I've added this to my FB group dedicated to cover versions "The Guilty Pleasure of the Cover Version"

  • God, I miss Lux! :-(

  • @steverino333 -- Original song sung by Jim Lowe in 1956.

  • Lux Lives!

  • off one of the best albums ever.

  • The notorious hardcore porn film of the early 1970s used this same title, "Behind the Green Door", but it had nothing to do with the original version of this song from 1956. They just used the same title.

And of course by the time the Cramps did this version, it was about 10 years after the porn film.

  • Damn, I love the Cramps. Saw them at the Brixton Academy back in 1990. Damn, it was over 2 decades ago. RIP Lux Interior; while you were here you made life even better for those of us who have had the privilege to walk this earth.
