I understand that towards the end of his life, Stephen Foster was wont to sell his songs for drinks, so the thinking is we'll never really know just how many wonderful songs he left us with. Such a sad end for one so talented ...

Not uncommon at this time for vocalists to be deprived of their credit. They usually got written down on the record as vocal refrain or vocal chorus !
