(I recommend listening to all five songs, in sequence.)

Berg: Five Orchestral Songs, op. 4, No. 5

Hier ist Friede. Hier weine ich mich aus über alles!
Hier löst sich mein unfassbares, unermessliches Leid,
das mir die Seele verbrennt ...
Siehe, hier sind keine Menschen, keine Ansiedlungen.
Hier ist Friede! Hier tropft Schnee leise in Wasserlachen ...

Here is peace. Here I cry my heart out over everything!
Here dissolves the incomprehensible, immense pain
that burns my soul ...
See, here are no people, no settlements.
Here is peace! Here snow falls gently into flowing water ...

Bethany Beardslee, soprano; Robert Craft conducting
the Columbia Symphony Orchestra

Recorded in 1960 by the performers of the American premiere.

  • Great recording as I said before. But the last sentence should actually read "Here snow drips quietly into pools of water."

  • Jonny

  • Magnificent. It makes more sense when you read the lyrics also.

  • Very dissonant music, it never caught on with the public.
