On the cusp of inheriting his father's estate, Swanson (Tim Heidecker, "Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!") is a man with unlimited options. An aging hipster in Brooklyn, he spends his days in aimless recreation with like-minded friends ("Tim & Eric" co-star Eric Wareheim, LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy and comedian Gregg Turkington a.k.a."Neil Hamburger") in games of comic irreverence and mock sincerity. As Swanson grows restless of the safety a sheltered life offers him, he tests the limits of acceptable behavior, pushing the envelope in every way he can. Played brilliantly by Heidecker, his deadpan delivery cleverly masks a deep desire for connection and sense in the modern world. THE COMEDY wears its name on its sleeve, but director Rick Alverson's powerful and provocative character study touches a darkness behind the humor that resonates with viewers long after the story ends.

The whole fucking point of this movie is to show how ridiculous and hollow it is to BE a hipster. It is not a movie made FOR hipsters, but actually a kind of commentary about how stupid and arrogant it is to BE a hipster. So many people either completely missed the point of this movie, or comment about it before actually watching it. It's an awesome, intelligent movie that a lot of detached and desensitized people need to see.

I did get it, actually. It's pointless by design. I know Tim and Eric fanboys want to think it's some brilliant anti-comedy, but it's not. In fact, it being mistaken for a comedy of any kind is part of that design. There's too many key moments that support it working as a serious commentary on the type of people who find humor in being completely insincere and mean-spirited living very hollow lives, and Tim Heidecker promoted this movie completely straight in interviews.

You did not get the point of the movie. No need dwell on it.

Yeah, I'm really not a big Tim and Eric fan (I get their humor and why it appeals to people, but it just doesn't do it for me), but I was really surprised by this movie. Tim, for one, actually gives a pretty solid performance in this movie. So good, in fact, I kind of wish he'd get into more serious acting every now and then.

interesting Tim would do a movie with an important theme being lack of seriousness or lack of integrity as a thinking human when most of their bits actually shun seriousness of any kind. I need to see this film. Sad considering what a big T&E fan I am.
