In December, 2007, a Hong Kong oil tanker named Hebei Spirit went to unload its cargo in the South Korean port of Daesan on the Yellow Sea coast of Taean County, South Korea. The port officials (harbor master) requested the oil tanker wait outside the harbor, drop anchor until receiving further instructions. While oil tanker was waiting and follow the harbor masters orders, two tug boats nearby were hauling a crane barge owned by the South Korean corporation Samsung Heavy Industries. The barge broke loose and collided with the oil tanker, puncturing the tanker in three places causing an oil spill of some 10,800 tones of oil. The spill occurred near Mallipo Beach, considered on of South Koreas most popular beaches. To their credit some 20,000 South Korean volunteers help clean up this ecological disaster. This was South Koreas worse such disaster, second to the Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989 in Prince William Sound, Alaska, United States of America (USA).
As a result the South Korean authorities arrested the two tug boat captains. They also arrested the captain and first mate of the oil tanker, which was Indian mariners, named: Captain Jasprit Chawla, and Syan Chetan. Their trail was in December, 2008. They were exonerated (found innocent) of all charges. However the South Korean authorities appealed the decision. Apparently there must be no laws regarding double jeopardy in South Korea. The appeal resulted in the two Indian mariners being found guilty and sentenced to prison, plus a fine. This travesty of justice has outraged the International Transport Workers Federation, International Group P&I Clubs, BIMCO, International Chamber of Shipping / International Shipping Federation, International Association of Dry Cargo Shipowners (INTERCARGO), International Association of Independent Tanker Owners (INTERTANKO), the Hong Kong Shipowners Association, and other shipping and sea related unions around the globe. They are calling for a boycott of South Korean products and shipping until the two Indian mariners are released.
In another part of the oceans, the Antarctica: Per news organizations the Japanese whaling fleet was chased out o the Antarctica by Sea Shepherds garbage scow, the Steve Irwin. The Japanese government has recently discussed deploying the Japanese Navy. However the deployment they are discussing is not protecting their whale fleet, but to deter pirates off the Horn of Africa, the Somali pirates. What about the children playing as pirates on their garbage scow which resulted in the Japanese whaling fleet leaving Antarctica?

No Tony what I am saying is you have no right to protest against jailing of two indian mariners while your own country have the same law regarding safety during rough water. Two indian mariners are not in jail because they caused the accident. They are in jail because they violated a safety law which caused more than 2/3rd of unnecesary spill. Because they violated this rule the disaster was 3 times bigger than it should been. If they got only 18 month they got off very light.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
It is against the law to pressurize oil taker cabin prior to safely docking. If you want to free those two jailed indian mariners change your own law first so every oil tanker that comes to your country is pressurized before docking.

So according to you, two Indian mariners are sitting in a South Korean jail because of an American law?
