you hold down shift when selecting the next letter

ok everytime i try to select the next letter, it won't let me! what am i doin wrong???

i don't know why but when i go to select the text with the magic wand it doesn't do anything.

To select your letters it's easier to select the blank area then click on "selections" and "invert".
Nice tutorial.
