Creative Impulses vs. Audience

Doctor Who Update:

I just watched David Tennant's last episode and Matt Smith's first. David Tennant's last episode was pretty much the most heartbreaking thing ever. I thought he was fantastic. Particularly loved "The Family of Blood" and "Midnight." All and all guys, thanks for convincing me to watch Doctor Who, I'm greatly enjoying the series.

i think audience sensibilities can evolve based on artistic creation. artists driving taste, or artists burning it (duchamp)

in principle, i would take artistic integrity, just because of its associations with passion (suffering) and redemption. alone with her work, holding on to her beliefs, her truth, misunderstood.

I guess that I believe that audience should not dictate personal creativity because it does not cause it. creativity causes audience expectations which can evolve. i think..idk.

@yose926 Interesting perspective. But I think it is possible for audience to cause, or at least inspire, personal creativity in some situations. Like, I am more inspired to post consistent videos now that I have an audience on youtube more so than I was when nobody watched my videos. I would still be interested in creating things if I had no audiences, but perhaps the things I chose to create would be different.

The whole point of short stories it to tell a tale ... to an audience! So I that task is impossible!

@jdsfblaggf Seriously. I thought about it some more, and if the prompt had just said to "write" without thinking about audience, that would have been easy for me. That's exactly what I do when I write in a journal. But as soon as "short story" is attached, the purpose of the writing becomes all about the audience, and thus the writing prompt just doesn't really work...

I think artistic creativity can be preserved while working with boundaries or limits, especially those that an audience might present. Those limits are a great cause for thinking creatively, to find the most satisfying way to create what is naturally desired and make it accessible to an audience at the same time. But, I do occasionally have to create things for myself as well. Limits can get frustrating sometimes.

@DavidVlogs Yes! I completely agree, having limits can make tasks less daunting (or more daunting) and inspire ideas that wouldn't have been thought otherwise. And I'm the same way about making things for myself as well - it's why I journal and doodle and draw and make little books for myself. :)

interesting concept.Me, my brother and two cousins have these fictional alter-egos, a 'self-contained' backstory universe from which we draw to make short films and fiction.watching/reading It would be completely baffling for someone who was not one of the four of us,since theres many inside references that we make no effort to explain since only 4 of us will ever read it.yet some of the stuff I've created for this concept is some of the stuff i'm proudest of.Yet only 4 people will ever see it!

I follow my deepest creative impulses every time I write a story or make a Youtube video. My ratings say that my videos suck. I literally lol'd when I saw this.

I don't think about the audience, don't really have too much of one. I just think when it's done if I'm comfortable letting it be available. Unless I'm making a video for a specific person then I think of them and no one else. If I consider myself to be my audience then I do think of audience.

I feel that artistic integrity is simply doing what you love to do without feeling like you're cheating yourself or your art. So, if you want to reach an audience with your artwork then you must think about them. Or you would be losing your own artistic integrity by not reaching the audience you would love to reach.

Also, when it comes to the whole "what makes a short story," "how short is a short story," Hemingway wrote a story with six words:

This issue is really important when it comes to music. A lot of artists get accused of "selling out" when they start to appeal to a wider audience, because clearly they must be doing whatever it is they're doing just for the sake of that audience. As an aspiring musician myself, well, right now it's easy to write whatever I want because I have no audience beyond my close friends. My hope is that, when the time comes, people will just like what I do, without me changing a thing.

your videos are very interesting. I think its possible, not every time but sometimes. I think if i were to act on artistic impulses, i would draw scenes from dreams and day dreams. The only fictional things i've written for enjoyment were dreams that I turned into short stories, but when i was finished they felt too personal to share with everyone so i would only show it to a few people.

I am making videos for fun so never thought of audience's reaction. But there is audience and there is audience. Some people enjoyed what I have done even it was for fun. World is a big place, you can find people who may like your works.

I think that you should consider audience to some extent when creating content that you intend to share with others. That's part of the reason you are creating something (for others to take in and react to) and it's important to make sure your content is interesting and compelling, which can be hard to do when you're stuck in your own head. But it's also important to make content that you enjoy. You can't just make stuff for the sake of other people. It's a balance.
