Not walking on tatami mats in your shoes is an inherent part of the Japanese culture, not to mention the tatami mats are expensive. That would be like having a really expensive set of pure white clothes and rolling in dirt/mud when you don't have to...

Question: What happen if you got caught being seen wearing shoes around the house? Will they fine you? I notice every American who live there always take their shoes off before walk through their apartment.

thats kind of what my sisters house looks like,but she has 2 floors,the top floors hallways are much more spacious and we used to all sleep upstairs in case some one broke into the home.
