shouldnt the coltrane progression he wrote be " d-7, E7, AbM7, B7, EM7, G7, CM7" ???

@afromanola Any time you substitute the minor 3rd motion it becomes a coltrane cycle. Just back-cycling the Ab in this case :)

@jakehertzog so basically a coltrane cycle is whenever you cycle chords by either major OR minor thirds?
afromanola 6 months ago
@afromanola Traditional "Coltrane" cycle a la "Giant Steps" is major 3rds, embellished by ii-Vs, so B, Eb, and G are the key centers. "Central Park West" uses minor thirds, for example, C, Eb, Gb, A as key centers. So really, any major or minor third motion would be considered 'coltrane' changes. you can embellish with ii-Vs or side slipping all you want and it will still sound great! - jazz hard!

what is the theory behind those subs? how do they fit? explain what the interchange is and how it works, is it the same thing as a tritone substitution?
xOnimpulsex 8 months ago
@xOnimpulsex The theory is modal interchange, not the same as tri-tone substitution, but similar concept. hit me up for an online lesson if you want to go more in-depth. thanks for checking out!
